Local Services Ads are eating the plumbing search page

Google keeps handing the plumbing results page to Local Services Ads and AI answers. What that shifts for a plumbing company, and what to do this month.
Pull up "plumber near me" on a phone in any decent-sized metro and count what a homeowner sees before they scroll. Two or three Local Services Ads with green Google Guaranteed badges. Often an AI summary above or beside them. Then paid search. Then, somewhere down there, the map pack that plumbing companies have spent a decade optimizing for.
The organic map pack has not gone away. It has been pushed down the phone screen, and on a phone, down the screen is the same as gone for a lot of callers.
What this changes
Three practical shifts for a plumbing company.
Review count now sits in the ad itself. LSA rank is driven heavily by review count, rating and responsiveness. Unlike a Search ad, where the copy is whatever you wrote, the LSA unit shows your star rating and your review number to every person who sees it. Across 77,218 plumbing listings the median company has 21 reviews and 52.6% have fewer than 25. Against a competitor showing 340, that number is doing damage before anyone clicks.
Answering speed became a ranking factor, not just a sales factor. Google measures how you handle LSA leads. Miss calls, and you get fewer of them. That is the first time a plumbing company's phone habits directly change how much traffic Google sends. What used to cost you one job now costs you position.
The AI summary picks its own names. When a homeowner asks an assistant instead of typing a query, the answer names two or three companies and the rest of the page never loads. That selection runs on clear website text, consistent listings and specific review language, not on bid.
What it does not change
The badge is a screening device, not a closing device. LSA gets you into the consideration set. The homeowner still checks your reviews, still glances at your site, and still decides in the first 20 seconds of the phone call.
So the fundamentals did not move. What moved is the order. A shop with 18 reviews and no website used to be able to buy its way onto the page with Search ads. Now the top of the page is a channel where your review count is printed on the ad and your answer rate sets your delivery. Buying your way past a weak profile is getting harder every quarter.
What to do this month
Get approved for LSA if you are not. Background check on the business and the owner, license verification, general liability certificate. Two to three weeks. Start now and you are live before the pre-winter run.
Set your budget by lead count, not by dollars. Five leads a week at $35 to $90 per lead in most metros. Dispute the junk. Google credits a fair share of wrong-number, out-of-area and wrong-service leads, and shops that never dispute pay 10% to 20% more than they should.
Fix the phone before you turn it on. Answer rate under 85% means LSA will throttle you and you will blame the channel. Missed-call text-back within 20 seconds, one named person on lead duty, five-minute response target. The missed calls guide has the setup and the calculator shows what the gap costs.
Start a review process today, not next quarter. One ask at the door per completed job. It compounds in LSA rank, in map rank and in the AI answers at the same time. Only 23.1% of plumbing companies have crossed 100 reviews, so the bar for standing out is lower than it feels. Scripts are in the reviews guide.
Write three service pages a machine can quote. Water heater, drain, sewer. Open each with a sentence that names the service, the cities and a price range. That single sentence is what an AI assistant lifts. The AI search guide covers the rest.
The uncomfortable part
Every one of those five items is a fundamentals item. None of them is a trick, and none is fast. That is exactly why the field stays thin. 28.7% of plumbing companies still list no website. 39.4% list no hours. The competition in your city is not doing this either.
The page layout will keep changing. Google has redesigned the local results four times in five years and will do it again. What survives every redesign is the same short list: a complete profile, a lot of recent reviews, a fast site with real service pages, and a phone somebody answers. Build those and the layout stops mattering much.
