Plumbing Owners Edge

How to get a plumbing company recommended by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI

Homeowners now ask an AI assistant who to call. Here is what those systems read, and the plain changes that put a plumbing company in the answer.

A homeowner types "who is a good plumber in Boise for a water heater" into ChatGPT and gets three names with a sentence about each. No map pack, no ten blue links, no ad. If you are not one of the three, you did not lose a click. You never entered the conversation.

This is not a new algorithm to beat. The AI answer engines read the same public material Google reads, then summarize it. What changes is the format they reward. They quote clear sentences that state a fact. They cannot quote a hero image that says "Quality Service Since 1998".

What the answer engines actually pull from

In rough order of weight for a local service business:

  1. Your Google Business Profile, including category, services, hours and the text of your reviews.
  2. Your website text, specifically pages that name a service and a city in ordinary sentences.
  3. Directory and association listings where your name, address and phone match exactly.
  4. Local news, chamber pages, supplier pages and anywhere else a human wrote your name.

Consistency across those four is the single biggest lever. If your suite number is on two of them and missing on the other two, you look like two businesses to a machine that is trying to decide whether you exist.

Write pages a machine can quote

Open every service page with a sentence that answers the question directly. Not "Your comfort is our priority." Instead: "We replace gas and electric water heaters in Meridian, Eagle and Boise, usually same day, starting at $2,150 installed for a 50-gallon gas unit."

That sentence has the service, the cities, the timing and a price. An assistant can lift it whole. The other version has nothing to lift.

Do the same for the questions homeowners actually type. Give each its own H2 and answer it in 40 to 80 words:

  • How much does it cost to replace a water heater in [city]
  • Why is my water pressure low all of a sudden
  • How much is a sewer camera inspection
  • Do I need a permit to replace a water heater
  • How long does a repipe take

Answer honestly, with ranges. A range gets quoted. "Call for pricing" gets skipped.

The structured data worth adding

Add LocalBusiness or Plumber schema to your home page with name, address, phone, hours, service area, price range and links to your Google profile and social accounts. Add FAQPage schema to the question blocks. Add Service schema on each service page. This is 20 lines of JSON-LD, not a project.

Then publish an llms.txt file at the root of your domain: a plain text index of what your business does, the cities you serve, and links to your main pages. It is a young convention, adoption is uneven, and it costs an hour. This site publishes one.

Check your robots.txt while you are there. Some hosting templates block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended by default. Blocking them keeps you out of exactly the answers you want to be in.

Reviews are the sentences the AI repeats

Answer engines quote review text. A hundred reviews that say "great service" give a machine nothing to work with. Fifty that say "replaced our sewer line under the driveway in two days and cleaned up after themselves" give it a specific claim to repeat.

So change the ask. When the tech sends the review link, add one line: "If you can, mention what we fixed and the town." Across 77,218 plumbing listings the median company has 21 reviews and 52.6% have fewer than 25. There is a lot of room. The reviews guide has the scripts.

Get named somewhere other than your own site

Assistants weigh third-party mentions heavily because anyone can write anything on their own site. Practical, boring places a plumbing company can get listed in a week: your local chamber of commerce, the state contractor license lookup, your city or county business directory, BBB, Angi and Thumbtack profiles (claimed, even if you never buy leads), your supplier's "find a pro" page, the manufacturer dealer locator for the water heater brand you install, and Nextdoor.

Match the name, address and phone character for character across all of them. If you sponsor a little league team or a fire department fundraiser, ask for a linked mention on the organizer's page. One local page that a human wrote is worth more than 50 directory submissions.

How to check whether it worked

Once a month, ask each of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Gemini the five questions a homeowner would ask in your metro. Write down who gets named. Do it from a logged-out browser or a fresh session so your own history does not skew it.

Expect movement in six to twelve weeks, not six days. The inputs are slow because the underlying sources are slow. But the competitive field is thin: with 28.7% of plumbing companies not even listing a website in the benchmark report, the number of shops doing any of this in your city is close to zero.

Frequently asked

Is this different from SEO? It overlaps by about 70%. Clear text, consistent listings and real reviews serve both. The difference is that AI answers reward direct, quotable sentences and punish marketing filler harder than Google does.

Do I need to blog every week? No. Five excellent service pages and a real FAQ beat 40 thin blog posts. Depth per page matters more than page count.

Will paying for AI ads fix this? There is no reliable pay-to-appear in these answers for a local plumbing company yet. What you can buy is the groundwork, and the groundwork is the same work that improves your map ranking.
